How to Care for Oriental & Persian Rugs (Without Ruining Them)

A quality Oriental or Persian rug can outlive its owner — there are rugs in service today that are over a century old. But that longevity depends entirely on how it's treated. Most rug damage we see in North Bellmore homes wasn't caused by wear. It was caused by well-intentioned cleaning done the wrong way.

Rule One: A Rug Is Not Carpet

Wall-to-wall carpet is synthetic, machine-made, and engineered to withstand aggressive alkaline chemicals. A hand-knotted rug is wool or silk, colored with dyes that can bleed, on a foundation that can shrink or rot if handled badly. Renting a carpet machine and running it over a Persian rug is how heirlooms get destroyed in an afternoon. Fine rugs need dedicated rug cleaning with pH-balanced solutions and dye-stability testing first.

Everyday Care That Extends Rug Life

Vacuum weekly — gently. Use suction only, no beater bar, and never vacuum the fringe (it catches, pulls, and shreds). Rotate the rug 180° every 6–12 months so sunlight fading and traffic wear even out. Use a quality rug pad — it prevents slipping, cushions the foundation, and stops the backing from abrading against the floor.

When Spills Happen

Blot immediately with a clean white cloth — never rub, which grinds the spill in and distorts the pile. Work from the outside of the spill inward. Plain cool water on the cloth is safe; supermarket spot removers usually are not, because their chemistry can set stains and bleed dyes on natural fibers. If the spill is significant, call a professional before experimenting: (516) 894-2954.

Professional Cleaning: Every 1–3 Years

Even with perfect home care, soil works down into the foundation of the rug where it acts like sandpaper against the knots. Professional cleaning every one to three years — depending on traffic — removes that abrasive soil and revives the wool's natural luster. Fringe detailing should be included, not an upsell (it is in ours).

Pets and Fine Rugs

Pet urine is a dye emergency on a natural-fiber rug — it can permanently alter colors within days. If an accident happens on a good rug, don't wait for your next scheduled cleaning. Our pet stain and odor treatment can be adapted to delicate rugs when it's done quickly.
